Electron Probe Microanalysis (EPMA)

چکیده
An electron microprobe is an electron microscope designed for the non-destructive x-ray microanalysis and imaging of solid materials. It is essentially a hybrid instrument combining the capabilities of both the scanning electron microscope (SEM) and an x-ray fluorescence spectrometer (XRF), with the added features of fine-spot focusing (~ 1 micrometer), optical microscope imaging, and precision-automated sample positioning. The analyst makes measurements while observing the sample (with the optical microscope or with a secondary/backscattered electron image) and selecting specific analysis locations (using the precision sample stage).

Corophium volutator (Pallas) has been recommended by the paris Commission as one of the standard species for testing chemical used in offshore oil and gas exploration/production. In the present study, gut contents of Corophium volutator have been analysed by electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) for BaSO4 and other heavy metal impurities after exposure tto spiked sediments followin...
متن کاملQuantitative Energy-dispersive Electron Probe X-ray Microanalysis of Individual Particles
An electron probe X-ray microanalysis (EPMA) technique using an energy-dispersive X-ray detector with an ultra-thin window, designated low-Z particle EPMA, has been developed. The low-Z particle EPMA allows the quantitative determination of concentrations of low-Z elements such as C, N, and O, as well as higher-Z elements that can be analyzed by conventional energydispersive EPMA. The quantitat...
متن کاملMicrobeam analysis of irradiated materials: practical aspects.
Among the microanalytical techniques, electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) is one of the most powerful. Its performances can be used to provide an accurate characterization. In the present article the differences between the EPMA of highly irradiated materials and standard EPMA are highlighted. It focuses on the shielded EPMA specificities. Then, the article presents the difficulties encountered...
متن کاملPractical aspects of carbon content determination in carburized steels by EPMA.
The carbon contents in carburized steels were investigated by electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) for a range of carbon levels in the solid solution less than 1 wt%. This article describes the difficulties encountered with the classic analytical procedure using the k ratio of X-ray intensities and the phi(rhoz) model. Here, a suitable calibration curve method is presented with emphasis on the m...
متن کاملDetermination of the composition of Ultra-thin Ni-Si films on Si: constrained modeling of electron probe microanalysis and x-ray reflectivity data
The homogeneous bulk assumption used in traditional electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) can be applied for thin-layered systems with individual layers as thick as 50 nm provided the penetration depth of the lowest accelerating voltage exceeds the total film thickness. Analysis of an NIST Ni-Cr thin film standard on Si using the homogeneous model yielded certified compositions and application of...
متن کاملQuantification Of Actinides By EPMA: a New Accurate Standardless Approach
Electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) is used to quantify with a high accuracy the amount of different elements present on a sample of unknown composition. In the nuclear field, EPMA is largely used to quantify the amount of actinides present in fresh and irradiated fuels. EPMA is also used to manage waste disposal, to analyze sample from severe accidents and to assess the design of next-generati...
